NICCS Groundbreaking Ceremony

Come celebrate this important milestone and the opportunities it will create for NIU, the students and the communities it serves.

The Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability (NICCS) groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 15, 2025, at 3:30 PM at 305 Presidents Blvd., DeKalb, IL, celebrating a major milestone for NIU and the communities it serves.

The ceremony is to mark the official start of construction for NICCS, a 15,000‑square‑foot mixed‑use research, innovation, and education facility on NIU’s west campus. It brought together researchers, students, industry partners, and community stakeholders to celebrate the opportunity for new sustainability‑focused research, teaching, and outreach.
